ITALIAN BOOK LAUNCH AT ITS

Tuesday, Mar 09, 2010

The Centre for Cultural and Heritage Studies of the Institute of Tourism Studies, in collaboration with the Slow Food Malta and the Italian Cultural Institute (Malta) collaborated to introduce Dr Marcella Croce, an Italian author on traditional gastronomy, to the Maltese public. The event was held at the Institute of Tourism Studies on Monday 8th March 2010 to a mixed audience of the general public, students and lecturers.

The first speaker during this event was Prof Carmel Cassar, the President of the Slow Food Malta Convivium. He spoke about the Slow Food movement and its relevance to modern day when appreciation of good authentic food is lacking. He highlighted the various methods, ways and activities that a Slow Food movement member can aspire to, and it was clear that these points are valid and beneficial to one and all.

Dr Marcella Croce then introduced the subject of her book, Guida ai Sapori Perduti – storie e segreti del cibo Siciliano, and the fascination of writing about food. Her talk, which was illustrated with interesting photos, concentrated on various subjects, but most of all about wheat, olive oil and grapes, or the so-called holy trinity of the Mediterranean food. In her presentation she indicated the existence of the same food culture since prehistoric times and antiquity, thus clearly indicating that what we still have today around us, is the inherited heritage of past generations. Information about the connection of certain food and particular feasts were illustrated.

The event had the support of Dr Bruno Busetti, the Director of the Istituto Italiano di Cultura (Valletta), through whose contacts this event materialised. The event was presented by Mr Vincent Zammit, the coordinator of the Centre for Cultural and heritage Studies.
