What is the International Internship ?
The International Internship is a 12 month practical experience in the hospitality industry which ITS students undertake in a foreign country. Moreover, it is a module within the ITS Programme of Studies which carries six (6) academic credits.
It is a compulsory module for students following the Diploma Course in Hospitality Management as well as for those students persuing other courses such as Hotel Operations, Accommodation Operations, Sports Leisure & Recreation Studies, FPP & Supervisory Studies and FBS Supervisory Studies), who intend to proceed with their studies up to Diploma level. ESTS students and Day Release students may also choose to take on this Internship solely for more work experience overseas.
Whilst on Internship, students have a duty to become true Ambassadors to the Property and ITS.
To have a successful Overseas Internship one must have:-
- a positive attitude
- the willingness to take on new challenges
- the acceptance to go through change
The Purpose and the Benefits
The purpose of the International Internship is for students to practice what they have learnt in theory during their studies at Certificate level as well as to help them improve their technical skills. The Internship offers students the chance of gaining awareness leading to a deeper insight on the Art of Hospitality.
Students may benefit through the International Internship in various ways They may enhance their self-development by solving their own problems, increasing their self-confidence and growing into maturity. Students are expected to negotiate their own learning agreements with their Head of Department, thus developing further their communication skills.
The International experience also offers students the chance to explore a new country, meet new people, understand different cultures, and improve their language skills.
Method of Application
Applications can be obtained from the International Office. Every year the International Office runs two (2) Internship Programmes. Students are prepared to travel out on internship either for the June/July Programme or the October Programme.
Along with their application forms, students must submit the following (by a set date) to the International Office:-
- European CV
- References (personal/work)
- 3 passport sized photographs
- Copies of available certifications
- Property preference sheet
The International Internship fee of Lm30 (payable to the accounts department) must be settled prior to submission of application.
At the beginning of a new International Internship Programme a preliminary meeting is organized by the International Office where a pack is distributed to students with all the related documents required. Detailed information regarding the procedures and expenses involved for the co-ordination of internships are disclosed at this meeting.
The International Office is ALWAYS there to help students in many ways. We focus on:-
- Addressing any queries and doubts students may have
- Making sure students are happy with their choice of Country and Property Selection
- Negotiating the best Terms and Conditions of work with the Properties
- Processing all necessary documents needed to make placements become a reality
- Prepare students for this rewarding experience
