GUIDANCE & COUNSELLING

The Guidance and Counselling Unit at the Institute of Tourism Studies provides a professional, confidential service in both personal counselling, and career / vocational guidance. The philosophy of the service is the overall well-being of the student attending the Institute of Tourism Studies. All students attending the ITS can access the service for any situation concerning their welfare.

The Guidance and Counselling Service at the ITS offers service provision to all students attending the Institute. The focus is on guidance programmes which are concerned with furthering all aspects of the personal development of students and developed in the context of the Institute's overall educational policy. This is done through the delivery of a personal and career development programme as well as through indidivual counselling sessions aimed at helping students become their best selves.

Guidance programmes are concerned with the identification of different needs and the implementation of strategies to meet these needs. This is done through:

1.  Addressing the 'normal' developmental needs which all students have in common as they progress through adolescence into adulthood.
2.  The specific personal educational and vocational needs of individual students.
3.  The needs which students encounter during their period at school as a result of the demands placed on them by the education system.
4.  Preparing job profiles for prospective job applicants and providing training.
5.  Providing incentives for job training and placements.

Furthermore, priority is given to:

1.  Enhance already existing services.
2.  Further all aspects of the personal development of students (including intellectual, social and vocational development).
3.  Actively promote the effective involvement of all staff in the personal development of students.
4.  Provide monitoring of services and ensure consistency with national policies and recommendations.
5.  Be responsible to changes in education, the community and society in general.
