Silvio Tonna, Sommelier at Marsovin
"At the age of 17 I started a course on Food and Beverage Service at the Institute of Tourism Studies. This four-year course requires students to do an internship programme and mine was in UK. After my return from UK, I proceeded with the fourth year of the course and with the help of ITS lecturers I also subscribed for the WSET course held at ITS. Through the WSET courses, I worked my way to get the Intermediate and Advanced Certificates. After acquiring the Advanced Certificate, I also had the great opportunity to take part in the most prestigious Sommelier Competition of Europe. This would not have been possible without the help and support of a lecturer at ITS.
This experience encourage me to continue to widen my knowledge on sommeliere, so I also embarked on other wine courses held by the Court of Master of Sommeliers which is a UK based association and I am now on the last step to become a Master Sommelier.
I presently work for Marsovin, a well-known local winery. In a nutshell, my job entails the training of caterers, compiling wine lists and setting up promotions, amongst other things." |
