Admission to the Institute of Tourism Studies 
 
Method of Application 
Application forms may be obtained from: 
  • The Office of the Registrar of the Institute of Tourism Studies, St George’s Bay, St Julian’s and from ITS Gozo, Qala.
  • ETC Job Centres in Valletta, Mosta, Birgu and Victoria Gozo.

Applications by post should be sent by registered mail and in sufficient time to ensure delivery by the deadline set. The Registrar will acknowledge such applications in writing within three working days. 
 
Programme of Studies 
Applications, accompanied by the relevant documentation, will be received by the Office of the Registrar by not later than noon of Friday 29th July 2011. 
 
The Application form duly completed should be accompanied by: 
  • Photocopies of all the Certificates required (or a photocopy of the result slips). Kindly note that original certificates are to be presented during the interview.
  • Photocopy of the Identity Card
  • References (if available).

Accreditation For Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) 
 
Applicants with documented work experience in the Tourism Industry may be awarded APEL CREDITS as follows: 
 
Work Experience 
Credits Each year at craft level 
1 point 
 
Each year at supervisory level 
2 points 
 
Each year at managerial level 
3 points 
 
Each case will be evaluated on its individual merit. 
 
Student Profiling And Selection Process 
 
Applicants satisfying the required entry criteria will be assessed on their individual skills and aptitude to follow a programme of studies at the Institute of Tourism Studies. Part of the assessment will include a personal interview. 
 
Applicants will be accepted according to the order of merit drawn up by the Admission Board, whose decision shall be final. 
 
Applicants may be refused entry to the Institute of Tourism Studies programmes if found to be unsuitable at any stage of the selection process. 
 
General Provisions 
  • Students must follow the time-tables set out by the Institute of Tourism Studies and may be required to attend morning, afternoon and/or evening sessions. They may also be required to attend sessions after normal hours, on public holidays and at weekends.
  • The language of tuition at the Institute of Tourism Studies is English.
  • The Institute may consider applications from mature students who are twenty three (23) years of age or over and who are not in possession of the full entry qualifications. Such applications will be considered on an individual basis and applicants will be asked to undertake an aptitude test and a personal interview.
  • Students presenting professional or postsecondary diplomas or certificates related in whole or in part to the area of study may, if approved by the Institute, be exempted from taking particular modules from the relevant programme of studies, provided full documentation is presented at the time of assessment.
  • Students who come into contact with food will be required to successfully complete a Food Handlers course in accordance with current Health & Hygiene Regulations prior to the commencement of the course.
  • Students shall undertake a medical examination to certify their suitability to join a programme of studies at the Institute of Tourism Studies.
  • The Institute reserves the right to determine the number of new entrants in relation to the availability of resources and the standard of applicants.
 
Remuneration 
The following stipends will be paid to full-time students of Maltese nationality who are not in full-time employment during the scholastic period.  
 
1st Year Students 
€28 per week 
 
2nd Year Students 
€39.62 per week 
 
3rd and 4th Year Students 
€51.31 per week 
 
The first stipend will be paid at the end of November. Thereafter stipends will be paid every four weeks in arrears. 
 
Students receiving a stipend are also entitled to receive half the annual Government bonus and have to pay their National Insurance Contributions. 
 
Industrial Placements 
  • Full-time students will be required to undertake a compulsory fourteen (14) week Local Industrial Trade Practice (LITP) during the summer months in establishments assigned to them by the Institute of Tourism Studies.
  • Conditions of employment and remuneration payable to students during the LITP will be compliant with Maltese employment regulations.
  • The satisfactory completion of the LITP is a requirement for all programmes of study.
  • Students may propose establishments where to conduct their placement. Final approval of such arrangements is at the discretion of the Executive Director.
  • The six (6) month International Internship is a compulsory component of some of the Diploma/ Higher National Diploma programme of studies.
  • Students who apply for an International Internship, as approved by Executive Director and who are accepted by properties approved by ITS will have to make their own travel and insurance arrangements.
  • The Executive Director’s decision on the placement of students is final.
 
Conduct 
All registered full-time and parttime students shall be subject to the Rules and Regulations of the Institute of Tourism Studies.
