Board of Governors

In April 2010 the Hon Minister of Education, Employment and the Family appointed Ms. Claire Zammit Xuereb as the Chairman of the ITS Board of Governors. 
 
The other members of the Board are Mr. Joe Tanti (Deputy Chairman), Mr. Edwin Borg, Mr. Walter Cassar, Ms. Mary Anne Cauchi, Dr. Marie Louise Mangion, Mr. Joseph Micallef, Dr. Nadia Theuma and Dr Angele Attard. 
 
Ms. Catherine Baldacchino is the Secretary to the Board. 
 
 
Claire Zammit Xuereb - Director of Hospitality  
 
Holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Hospitality and Tourism Studies. 
 
Serves as Director of Hospitality for AX Holdings after holding the position of General Manager to both The Victoria Hotel and The Palace. This was achieved after years of training and experience within the same industry in various departments, locally and internationally. 
 
She is also a Council member at Malta Hotels and Restaurants Authority where she has also served as a treasurer and vice president within the same council. 
 
Recently has been offered the position of Chairperson at Institute of Tourism Studies, after having sat on the board of Governors for the past year. 
 
 
Mr. Joseph Tanti 
 
Mr.Tanti has been on the Board of Governors of ITS for several years. 
 
He was appointed as CEO of the Malta Business Bureau in April 2009.  
 
Mr. Tanti holds a Masters in Human Resource Management from the University of Strathclyde (Business School) in Glasgow. He previously held the post of Head of Industry Human Resources Development at the Malta Tourism Authority where his responsibilities included the development of people in the tourism industry. Mr. Tanti also played a key role in the restructuring of the MTA as he was appointed as the Change Facilitator assigned to facilitate the restructuring process in relation to Human Resources.  
 
He has considerable expertise in a wide range of EU-funding Programmes. 
 
Throughout the years Joe has also gained extensive international experience having worked and lived in Switzerland, UK and Ireland.  
 
 
Mr. Edwin Borg 
 
Mr Borg has been a Member of the ITS Board of Governors for the last ten years. 
 
Formerly Head and Lecturer at ITS Gozo. Studied at MCAST (Hotel Management), Ealing College of Higher Education and Garnett College of Education (Technical). Apprenticeship at Dorchester Hotel, London.  
 
 
Mr. Walter Cassar 
 
He has been a Member of the Board of governor of ITS since 1993 
 
Mr. Cassar served in various government committee related to classification of Hotels and Restaurants. 
 
Member of the council of MHRA since 1992 till my retirement 2005. Chairman of Restaurant section of MHRA for several years till 2005. Regular contributor till 2005 on the MHRA magazine on subject related to Restaurant matters. Senior vice president of MHRA in the last 4 years of his terms 
 
Presently chairman of Walter G. Cassar Group, mainly involved in the hospitality and service industry. 
 
 
 
 
Ms. Mary Anne Cauchi 
 
Ms Cauchi is currently directing Artsphere International specialised in artistic direction, event management and project consultation whatever the scale of event or project, from intimate to mammoth, be it cultural, social, executive, press, sacred or secular. In addition to a drive for creativity and proficiency, Ms Cauchi has a thorough background in performance and music education.  
 
Amongst her academic qualifications she possesses a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in Music Studies and History of Art. She is also knowledgeable and experienced in the public relations and media industry.  
 
 
Dr. Marie Louise Mangion 
 
Ms. Mangion, heads the Tourism and Sustainable Development Unit within the Office of the Prime Minister and which also services the Malta Tourism Authority. She is responsible for formulating policies and for co-ordinating EU affairs relating to tourism and the environment.  
 
She is currently conducting doctoral research, with the University of Nottingham, UK, in the field of economics on tourism demand and competitiveness.  
 
Mr. Joseph Micallef 
 
Mr Micallef is a retired Public Officer. 
 
He served as Permanent Secretary to the Ministry for Gozo; as well as Director Resourcing (Public Sector) within the Office of the Prime Minister. Previously held the post of Director (Tourism) with ITS in the remit. 
 
During his long career as a Public Officer, Mr Micallef held the post of Secretary National Employment Authority, Secretary Hotels and Catering Establishment Board, Private Secretary to the Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Executive Secretary Association of Local Councils, Assistant Secretary General UHM and Secretary to the Lija Local Council. 
 
Dr. Nadia Theuma  
 
Nadia Theuma holds degrees in Anthropology and Tourism Studies. She is the Head of Department of Tourism Studies at the University of Malta. 
 
She has held advisory posts with the Ministries of Tourism and Education, MTA, Heritage Malta, Malta Crafts Council. She was a Board Director of Malta Tourism Authority where she was influential in various aspects of the Maltese Tourism Product.  
 
 
Dr. Angele Attard  
 
Dr. Angele Attard graduated from the University of Malta with a Doctor of Laws Degree in 2005. Following this she undertook a postgraduate Diploma in EU Affairs at the European College of Parma in Italy (2005-6) and a Masters in Educational Studies (Higher Education) at the University of Oxford in the UK (2006-7).  
 
Following completion of her masters, Angele worked at the National Commission for Higher Education (NCHE); Education International, the global teachers’ trade union organisation; and in the Secretariat of the Hon. Minister Dolores Cristina.  
 
Her current post is Assistant Private Secretary within the Minister’s Secretariat.  
 
Angele’s main areas of interest are higher education and law. She likes to travel and read.
